What is sex therapy?

Sex therapy is a form of psychotherapy (talk therapy) that views sexual health as an important component of overall emotional health.  Some concerns that can be addressed include:

  • relationship recovery after infidelity
  • arousal disorders
  • erectile dysfunction
  • desire discrepancy (one partner wants more/less sex)
  • recovery after a sexual trauma
  • gender identity
  • sexual orientation
  • out of control sexual behaviors
  • sexuality changes related to age
  • kink and BDSM
  • open and poly relationships

What happens in sex therapy?

The first few sessions of all therapy typically includes a comprehensive assessment where you will be asked a variety of questions to help the therapist determine what might be going on and how to help the best way.  The addition in sex therapy is that the therapist will also include questions about your sexual health and relationships.  You and the therapist discuss how frequently to meet, your goals of therapy, your progress on your goals ongoing and when you have met your goals.  When needed, the therapist can provide referrals to medical practitioners such as urologists, gynocologists and pelvic floor physical therapists to address the physiology of the body.

Do I have to be in a relationship to be in sex therapy?

Sex therapy can be done on an individual or couple basis reguardless of your current relationship status.

What does a sex therapist's training include?

Sex therapists have earned at least a master's degree in a social work or counseling related discipline and are licensed in their state to provide psychotherapy.  They also have additional specialized training specific to sexual health and diverse sexual practices and have had some amount of supervision in their treatment of sex therapy cases.
